Transport on the busy Homa Bay-Kisumu main road has been paralysed as angry protesters block the road using stones and electricity poles.
Shops within Homa Bay town, which serves as the county’s headquarters, remained closed for fear of looting by youths who invaded the town early in the morning.
The protesters, who were mainly based along the road leading to the Homa Bay Police station, could be seen throwing stones at the station in an attempt to provoke the uniformed officers.
The demonstrators have also been demanding to be teargassed even as police restrained themselves from engaging them in running battles.
The demonstrations called by Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Alliance have mostly been happening on Mondays – today marks the first Thursday that the protests are taking place.
Azimio leader Raila Odinga called for nationwide protests every Monday and Tuesday to demand that government lowers the cost of living among other demands.
The first mass protest was held on March 20, 2023. Azimio vowed to carry on with the demos until the government heeds their demands.
