All Saints Cathedral, Nairobi, has called out the police after they lobbed teargas in their church premises during the anti-Finance Bill 2024 protests.

The police who were trying to contain the protesters who wanted to storm the National Assembly premises on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, used teargas to disperse them.

However, the teargas lobbed at the protesters found its way to neutral spaces.

The All Saints’ Cathedral church in a statement has condemned the incident where the police lobbed teargas inside their compound, stating that it was wrong for the police to use force against peaceful demonstrators.

“It is unfortunate that the police have proceeded to lounge teargas into the All SAINTS’ CATHEDRAL church compound in a bid to immobilize unarmed protestors,” the statement reads.

The church further urged the police to respect worship centres while containing the protesters.

“We call on the police to exercise their duty within reason and respect neutral spaces like worship centres,” the church said in the statement.

The church had allowed the peaceful protesters to seek refuge in the compound while protecting themselves against the police.

However, the police aimed at disperse the protesters to prevent them from gathering in groups.

The police have spent the better part of today (Tuesday, June 25, 2024) in running battles with the protesters who stormed the Nairobi CBD from different entry points.

The protesters who were in large numbers accessed the Parliament precinct at around 3:00 pm on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

They were recorded running in different directions inside the Parliament Building after overpowering the law enforcement officers who had formed layers of defence around the area.

Some of the protesters were also pictured inside the cafeteria feasting on what appeared to be food meant for Members of Parliament.

Members of Parliament were also compelled to scamper for safety as overdaring protesters ran riot inside Parliament Buildings.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki on Monday, June 24, 2024, warned the protesters to strictly adhere to the rule of law while demonstrators.
