Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) reporter Abdiaziz Hashim was among journalists roughed up by rowdy youths during an Azimio presser at Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Foundation on Wednesday.

Expressing concern, the Political Journalist Association of Kenya (PJAK) condemned the assault in the strongest terms, denouncing the use of goons to disrupt and halt the press briefing.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible the uncouth, barbaric, and uncalled-for assault by the goons apparently under instruction to cause mayhem and stop the press briefing,” PJAK stated.

“The Azimio leadership called the press briefing, and if they felt it was unnecessary, causing mayhem was unjustified. They should have informed the journalists of any change of plans.”

“Violence against journalists is not only wrong but also undermines the freedom of the press, crucial for Kenyan democracy,” PJAK emphasized.

“While journalists suffered injuries and were forced to flee, the Azimio leadership has not shown concern for their well-being,” the statement read in part.

“We demand action against the perpetrators of this assault. Failure to do so will prompt us to mobilize a media blackout against Azimio until further notice.”

“The era of using goons to intimidate non-threatening journalists is over. Politicians resorting to such tactics should know their time is up.”

“Azimio must be held accountable for their actions, both commission and omission,” PJAK concluded sternly.
