The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has summoned Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI) Director Khalef Khalifa over alleged divisive and hateful utterances.
In a statement issued Wednesday, NCIC Chairman Samuel Kobia described Khalifa’s as discriminatory and inciteful.
Kobia stated that NICIC has commenced investigations into the matter and summoned Khalifa to appear before the commission on Monday, December 9, 2024.
“Our attention is drawn to the unfortunate divisive utterances verging on hate speech, ethnic contempt and religious discrimination made by Khalef Khalifa the Director, Muslims for Human Rights (MUHURI). What Khalifa says in the video clip is tantamount to beating drums of war which should have no place whatsoever in Kenya,” said Kobia
The commission noted that the utterances violated constitutional provisions under Article 33, which limit freedom of speech to exclude hate speech, incitement to violence, and propaganda for war.
Additionally, NCIC cited breaches of the National Cohesion and Integration Act, warning against any actions that undermine the rights of Kenyans to coexist peacefully regardless of their ethnic or religious affiliations.
