The National Police Service (NPS) has exposed social media accounts impersonating the newly appointed Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja.
However, NPS termed them fake, warning Kenyans to be cautious about the information shared with those accounts.
“We wish to caution the public against interacting with multiple fake accounts purporting to belong to the Inspector General-National Police Service, IG Douglas Kanja,” the statement read in part.
“The existing accounts are maintained by imposters with criminal intent to defraud unsuspecting Kenyans,” it added.
In the same breath, NPS informed Kenyans that the newly appointed police boss, Kanja, does not operate any social media accounts.
That implied that his official statements are only issued by NPS or through live press conferences.
The law enforcement thus directed Kenyans to treat information shared by social media accounts purporting to represent Kanja as fake news.
“Members of the public are urged to treat these posts as malicious and fake. Please note that IG Kanja does not operate any social media accounts,” NPS insisted.
To help stop the spreading of fake news, NPS appealed to Kenyans to report the five Facebook accounts.
Here are the links to the flagged accounts that Kenyans have been asked to report them.
