A lorry ferrying sodium cyanide overturned at Kambembe area of Rironi in Kiambu County spilling drums containing the highly poisonous substance.

Confirming the accident, the Kiambu Base Commander Aggripina Lugonzo said the accident was self-involved.

The Base Commander noted that on noticing that the cargo was a chemical substance that could be highly toxic, quickly mobilized colleagues including the Limuru OCS to help in securing the accident scene until when the truck had been cleared by experts who may handle the cargo professionally.

Lugonzo said the transporting company has been contacted and has sent another truck to collect the cylinders.

She said once the accident lorry has been towed to the police station, investigations will be launched to ascertain the cause of the accident.

She further asked the public to always keep off from accident scenes, especially those involving trucks ferrying goods that could be dangerous.

Sodium Cyanide is a solution used to extract metal ores, clean baths, and harden metal as well as used in making insecticides.

Sodium Cyanide is highly toxic and can affect breathing if inhaled and can also be absorbed through the skin. When in contact the highly toxic substance can irritate the skin and eyes.
