A devastating fire struck the University of Nairobi’s Gandhi Wing Wednesday night, causing extensive damage to the historic building, Gandhi Wing.
The blaze, which reportedly originated from a gas leak at the Arziki Restaurant, quickly spread to the Senior Common Room and Taifa Hall before firefighters could contain it.
Central OCPD Stephen Okal reported that while the initial fire was contained past midnight, a second outbreak occurred at dawn around 5 AM on Thursday, prompting the fire brigade to return to the scene.
Although no injuries were reported, the incident resulted in significant property damage to the administration offices and other facilities housed within the structure.
The Gandhi Wing also houses the institution’s Finance department and other key administrative offices.
Fire experts have been called in to investigate the cause and assess the full extent of the destruction.
Videos shared on social media captured the intensity of the blaze, with flames and smoke visible across the University’s Main Campus.
The University is expected to issue further statements regarding the incident later Thursday.
Meanwhile, Kenyans took to social media to call for swift action from authorities.
The Gandhi Wing, being part of Kenya’s oldest institution of higher learning, represents significant historical value, making its damage particularly impactful for the nation’s educational heritage.
