Embu County Government has suspended a clinical officer at Kiritiri Level Four Hospital in Mbeere South after a woman gave birth on the hospital veranda without professional assistance.

The Thursday night incident sparked public outrage, with residents accusing the county government of negligence.

Health CEC Jamal Runyenje termed the incident unacceptable, stating that every woman deserves medical assistance during childbirth.

He announced the suspension of both the clinical officer and a night guard who allegedly denied the woman entry into the facility.

Speaking after visiting the woman who was rushed to another facility by well-wishers, Jamal said the stern action should serve as a warning to all staff that acts of negligence would not be condoned.

Kenya National Union of Nurses Embu Branch Secretary Macharia Kanderi has urged authorities to allow the suspended staff to respond to the allegations before final disciplinary action is taken.
