Over 500 athletes have confirmed their participation in this Saturday’s National Cross Country series at the Eldoret Sports Club.

The event will be a culmination of the cross-country events for local athletes following the six Athletics Kenya cross-country series, which were held in Machakos, Kapsokwony, Iten, Olkalou, Bomet, and Kisii.

All regions as well as AK affiliate institutions have conducted their cross-country championships prior to this Saturday showdown.

The championship will feature three race categories, including 10 km senior men and women, under-20 men (8 km) and women (6 km) race, and the 2 km loop race for both men and women.

This year will be different with races commencing in the afternoon.

The schedule allows for an entertainment segment and a medical camp to be held before the main events, enhancing the experience for both athletes and spectators.

Athletes will also use the event as the last preparation for the 4th Sirikwa Classic World Cross Country tour to be held at the Lobo Village in Kapseret on the 22nd of this month, the only gold label cross country competition in Africa.

To spice up the competition, AK has revamped the prize money structure, ensuring top performers receive substantial rewards.

In the senior 10km races, the winner will pocket Sh200,000, followed by Sh130,000 for second place and Sh100,000 for third place.

Those finishing fourth to tenth will receive Sh70,000, Sh50,000, Sh40,000, Sh30,000, Sh20,000, and Sh10,000, respectively.

In the Under-20 category, the top three finishers will take home Sh140,000, Sh90,000, and Sh70,000, with additional prizes for those placing in the top ten.

The 2 km loop race, the winner will bag Sh50,000, with second and third places earning Sh40,000 and Sh30,000, respectively.
